Re:      Get Ready to Paint the Town Green: Bamberg County Council Adopts Veterans Resolution Ahead of Annual Veterans Day Celebration, Veterans Park Grand Opening, and Inaugural “Operation Green Light for Veterans”

Bamberg, South Carolina (November 2023) – On November 6, 2023, during their regular monthly meeting, Bamberg County Council adopted a veterans resolution sponsored by District 2 Councilwoman Sharon Hammond and Vice Chairman Evert Comer. The resolution comes ahead of the annual Bamberg Veterans Day Celebration and Veterans Park Grand Opening this Saturday, November 11 at 11 a.m. at Bamberg County Veterans Park.

The Bamberg County Veterans Resolution recognizes the “courage, valor, and sacrifice of the 1300 men and women from our community who have served in the United States Armed Forces and have defended our nation's freedom with honor and distinction, both during times of war and times of peace.” Additionally, the resolution acknowledges Bamberg County’s ongoing commitment to honoring veterans, including:

·         The dedication of the Bamberg County Veterans Memorial Trail on Veterans Day, November 11, 2020

·         The dedication of Bamberg County Veterans Park on Memorial Day, May 29, 2023

·         The 2023 Bamberg Veterans Day Celebration and Grand Opening of Bamberg County Veterans Park this Veterans Day, Saturday, November 11, 2023

·         Bamberg County’s inaugural participation in the National Association of Counties’  “Operation Green Light for Veterans” by lighting the Bamberg County Courthouse Annex and Isaiah Odom Building Gazebo green and requesting local businesses and residents to display green lights in their windows and entrances to honor local veterans

In addition to the general public, the Veterans Resolution will be shared with area veterans organizations and represents an effort to encourage Bamberg County citizens to join the County Council in celebrating and honoring all 1300 Bamberg County Veterans.

Councilwoman Sharon Hammond said, “Operation Green Light for Veterans is an easy way for county officials as well as Bamberg County businesses and residents to show their appreciation for our veterans. We encourage everyone who can join us in this effort to do so.”

United States Army Veteran, Vice Chairman Evert Comer expressed his gratitude for the extensive efforts Bamberg County has made to show him and his “comrades in uniform” they are “appreciated and remembered.” Furthermore, he said he is “delighted by the green light concept and cannot wait to see everything lit up in green.”

County Administrator Joey Preston said, “The Bamberg County Veterans Resolution is just one way we have honored and will continue to honor our 1300 local heroes, which represents ten percent of the entire Bamberg County population. While we can never fully articulate our appreciation, we will always strive to do so.” Preston went on to invite all Bamberg County citizens to participate in “Operation Green Light for Veterans” and to attend this Saturday’s Veterans Day Celebration and Veterans Park Grand Opening. “It will be a festive time to fellowship with neighbors and say thank you to those who have paid the greatest price for our freedom.”
