Re:      Bamberg County Enthusiastically Welcomes Inaugural Scandinavian Relay Race

Bamberg, South Carolina (January 2024) – Bamberg County forges a historic recreational partnership.

On January 27, 2024, Three Crosses Outreach of Norway, SC, will host its inaugural Scandinavian Relay Race. The 33-mile, 7-leg race route will cover portions of Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Finland, South Carolina. Approximately 100 runners and 30-50 volunteers will traverse through our beautiful region, spotlighting the hidden gem and tourist destination of Bamberg County. Traffic assistance across the Edisto River bridges on Highways 70 and 321 will be provided by SC Highway Patrol Troop 7.

A faith-based youth ministry, Three Crosses Outreach was founded in 1999 and has sponsored FREE summer day camps every summer since (including the summer of 2020 AND the summer after their building burned). The Scandinavian Relay Race will benefit their ministry by helping them to:

  • Expand their mentoring program
  • Increase their number of summer camp scholarships from 8 in 2023 to 12 in 2024
  • Establish a vibrant PTO at one of the local schools (Hunter-Kinard-Tyler School)

Bamberg County Council Chairman Dr. Jonathan Goodman expressed his excitement about this event as one that will help continue to “put Bamberg County on the map while supporting a worthy cause that promotes tourism, education, the environment, and physical and mental wellbeing.”

Vice Chairman Evert Comer said, “The Scandinavian Relay Race is further evidence of the unprecedented growth and momentum Bamberg County has been experiencing over the last several years. This race will not only promote the County, recreation, and physical health, it will also boost our local economy and positively impact our tourism industry.”

“What an incredible opportunity to showcase the natural resources and beauty of Bamberg County, an integral part of the Thoroughbred Country region, while investing in our most valuable asset: our children, our future,” said County Administrator Joey Preston. “We are thrilled to welcome Three Crosses Outreach and their inaugural Scandinavian Relay Race and to forge a historic partnership that will benefit our community for years to come.”
