Department Functions

There is one Magistrate Court in Bamberg County with one full time and one part time judge. Generally, Magistrates have criminal jurisdiction over offenses punishable by up to $500 fines and 30 days in jail. Magistrates also have civil jurisdiction over cases involving damages of $7500 and below.


All Magistrates are appointed by the Governor with the advice and consent of the Senate, to serve four year terms. South Carolina Court Administration provides administrative support to the Magistrate Courts.


Jury Trials/Jury Duty

All defendants have a right to a jury trial when requested. One must direct a jury trial request to the Magistrate that is scheduled to hear the case. Each court has a scheduled time to conduct jury trials and will contact all parties involved as to the date and time of their jury selection and trial.


Courtroom Appearance

Children are not allowed in court unless they are old enough to sit still and be quiet. You must wear shirt and shoes in the courtroom. No shorts above the knee. No Cell Phones or radios are allowed.

The Court does not accept payments after 4:30 p.m.

Bond Hearings are scheduled daily at 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Bamberg County Probate Court is closed to in-office visitors until further notice. The staff is still working but not accepting in-office visitors. Please call 803-245-3008 for more information.

Bamberg County Detention Center is suspending all visitation to inmates until April 30, 2020. Any questions should be directed to the Bamberg County Detention Center at 803-245-3020. 
Bamberg County Magistrate court is suspending jury trials until further notice. The Bamberg County Magistrate announced there are no changes with bond hearings. Any questions should be directed to the Magistrate's office at 803-245-3016.

Bamberg County General Sessions and Family Court are canceled until further notice. Jurors do not need to report to court. 
Per Governor Henry McMaster, all elections scheduled for March and April are postponed, including the City of Bamberg's special election on April 7, 2020. Bamberg County candidate filing will open at noon on March 16 and will close at noon on March 30. Please call the Bamberg County Voter Registration and Elections Office at 803-245-3028 with questions.
The ABBE Regional Library System will close all library buildings until April 5 with continuing evaluation.  Due dates on library materials will be extended and book drops will remain open. The Bamberg County Office on Aging is no longer providing meals at their location on Log Branch Road in Bamberg. All meals will be delivered to homes with appropriate safety measures. The senior center is closed to the public but medical transportation is still available. Please call 803-245-3021 for more information.
