Bamberg, South Carolina (March 2017) – Keep South Carolina Beautiful presented Keep Bamberg County Beautiful and one of its Volunteer Board Members with awards for excellence in their field Monday, March 13, 2017, at the Bamberg County Council meeting.

Sherryl Jenkins, Director for Keep South Carolina Beautiful and Grant Coordinator for PalmettoPride, first presented the awards at the KSCB and SC Litter Control Conference in February. Jenkins made a special trip to Bamberg County to present the awards in front of council and the KBCB Volunteer Board.

KSCB recognized KBCB with the Affiliate Recognition Award at the March County Council meeting. The award is given to affiliates in SC that show efforts to deliver a cleaner and improved community that enhanced the beauty of the environment through new technologies, improved waste handling and public space stewardship.

KBCB received one of the three the Affiliate Recognition Awards given across the state. This award is given to SC KAB Affiliates for their efforts in delivering a cleaner and improved community that enhances the beauty of the environment through new technologies, improved waste handling and public space stewardship.

Jenkins mentioned a few of KBCB’s accomplishments like receiving the KAB & Lowe’s Community Partnership Grant totaling $20,000 to complete the Educational Experience Park, their efforts in schools as it pertains to lessons in butterflies and litter prevention, and how KBCB has helped to collect more than 50,000lbs of litter from the roadways in Bamberg County. Keep the Midlands Beautiful, which covers Richland and Lexington County, and Keep York County Beautiful also received this award.

Chris Wilson, KBCB Volunteer Board Chair stated, “Being able to receive the Affiliate Recognition Award was such an honor. It was a surprise to us all and we would like to thank Keep South Carolina Beautiful, KAB, PalmettoPride, our board and many volunteers for their efforts in helping us to achieve such an honor.”

Detra
KSCB recently recognized Detra Salley Bruce, KBCB Volunteer Board Member, as the recipient of the Outstanding Volunteer Award for KSCB. Detra Salley Bruce, a Volunteer Board Member of KBCB, received the Outstanding Volunteer Recognition Award for her service to KBCB. Mallory Biering, Director of KBCB stated, “Detra was heading up events before she was even a board member. She comes early, stays late and is there until the job is done. We appreciate her efforts and commitment to this organization. Every KAB Affiliate needs someone like Detra.”

The Outstanding Volunteer Recognition Award is given to one person across the state of South Carolina, and honors a deserving volunteer or community leader, for their efforts to create and protect a cleaner community or to enhance the beauty of a neighborhood of public space. In the nomination for Bruce, it was said she creates, protects and enhances the programs of KBCB.

“She reminds us why we are part of KBCB. There are times when no one knows she is there, but she is in the background helping push us forward. She is our cheerleader day or night, rain or shine. She gives so much more than time to KBCB – she gives heart, soul and a lifetime of understanding of what KBCB can do for Bamberg County,” added Biering.

“We are proud to have nominated Detra for this award. She is a hard working volunteer for KBCB and we wouldn’t be who we are without her efforts,” stated Wilson.

Biering also presented Council with the KAB President’s Circle Award, which was received in January at the KAB National Conference. This achievement shows KBCB is active in their community, supports efforts in beautification, litter prevention and recycling, and is continuously measuring how they can better their organization for the benefit of all citizens and guests of Bamberg County. It was noted not all affiliates receive this award and KBCB “is proud to have been recognized by KAB for their efforts in achieving their mission.”
