Department Functions

Our primary duty is to protect the life and property of all citizens in Bamberg County. It is the goal of the Bamberg County Sheriff's Department to reduce both crime and the fear of crime throughout Bamberg County. From our derived authority, we seek to fortify the public trust.

J. Edward Darnell - Sheriff

Ed Darnell was appointed by Governor Edwards to fill the vacancy of Sheriff of Bamberg County in 1978. He has been committed to serving the citizens of Bamberg County for 29 years.

Sheriff Darnell attended the public schools in Bamberg County and graduated from Denmark High School in 1954. His career began in law enforcement in 1972 when he joined the Denmark Police Department. In 1973 Sheriff Darnell graduated from the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy. He served as an officer of the Denmark Police Department from 1972 until 1978. He attended the National Sheriff's institute in 1983. He was President of the Sheriff's Association in 1986 and voted "Sheriff of the Year" in 2001. Sheriff Darnell is retired from the S. C. Army National Guard and a member of the Denmark Masonic Lodge 246.

Bamberg County Emergency Management is responsible for coordination and operation of a county-wide, multi-hazard disaster preparedness program; Prevent the loss of life and property damage throughout Bamberg County attributable to all natural and man-made disasters.

Department Functions:

To receive 911 emergency and non-emergency calls and dispatch emergency responders (Police, Fire and Medical) to various locations as requested by the citizens.

We are the primary Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) for Bamberg County. We provide services for: Bamberg County Sheriffs Office, 5 municipal police agencies, 9 Fire Departments, and Bamberg County Rescue Squad, Inc.

The Bamberg County Fire Service consist of nine (9) fire departments which includes the Bamberg City Fire Department, Colston Fire Department, Denmark Fire Department, Clear Pond Fire Department, Govan Fire Department, Hunter’s Chapel Fire Department, Little Swamp Fire Department, Olar Fire Department, and Ehrhardt Fire Department.
